Rappelz is an MMORPG (Multi Player Online Role Playing Game) similar to the very popular World of Warcraft series. Players control a character that lives on a fictional island divided into areas inhabited by a range of beings. Characters begin as one of three races, Deva, a light based race or Gaia and Asura the human based races. Much like other RPGs of this class, much of the game play is dominated by quests to achieve items, level up a character and gain special powers or incentives.
Players will travel through hostile environments, enter towns where they can trade or purchase items and can engage other players in combat. Released in 2006 the game receives frequent upgrades that are referred to as ‘Epics.’ Each epic brings new items and features to the game.
Each race of players in the game has a set of classes to choose from. Deva are considered a light based race and maintain mostly a support role with limited offense or defense options. The Gaia are the humans of the story whom the other two races are assigned to assist. The Gaia are balanced in offense and defense and are largely neutral. The Asura are the darkness oriented race with high offense and lower defensive abilities.
Each character has the option to maintain relationships with pets that assist characters in their quests. Pets must first be tamed and can then be evolved through training that increases their abilities and skills. Pets can also be trained in villages but this reduces their potential. Villages are useful for attaining armor and items that could otherwise only be achieved through the killing of NPCs (Non Playable Characters). This process of ‘grinding’ is the most common form of game play in the system. Players are also allowed to form and join guilds. The dungeon system allows guilds to own a dungeon and enjoy perks such as taxes levied against players using their dungeons.
Rappelz is a free competitor to larger RPGs such as World of Warcraft. The differences between these games come down to preference of the player but can be quantified easily. For Rappelz players, game play is smoother due to a lower number of active profiles. While the player base for Rappelz is extensive it is not sufficient to overload the servers (there are four) for the gaming engine which prevents an excess of lag time. Another feature is PK or player killing.
Unlike a lot of other MMOs this game supports player killing on three of its servers with one reserved for strictly non-PK play. The system also enforces a penalty system for attacking and killing other players such as lowered experience points. As your attacks on others, increase morality is affected and it becomes possible for other players to attack you as well, regardless of whether they have PK turned on.
For new players to the MMORPG market or fans of more expensive versions seeking a free alternative to subscription gaming systems, Rappelz is a very viable alternative. The developers have maintained a steady stream of updates that keep the game play engaging and devoted a lot of time to features popular amongst serious players. Overall there are no negative issues that distract from the enjoyment factor of this game.
Rappelz is offered for free online play through the web portal gPotato which is operated by Webzen a South Korean entertainment company. Webzen offers a large variety of online games for free with a micro pay system utilized to generate cash flow. In game items and perks serve as the company's main source of income from games.
