MechWarrior Online is a vehicular combat video game developed by Piranha games for Windows Microsoft which was recently launched last September 2013. The game takes place within the BattleTech universe, which is a wargaming and science fiction franchise launched by FASA Corporation in 1984, acquired by WizKids in 2000, and owned since 2003 by Topps. The game mainly focuses on combat, military operations, and cooperation between team members.
In MechWarrior Online, players are called “MechWarriors” and pilot a large combat vehicle called BattleMechs . With an array of weapons and equipment, players can customize their own Mech to their liking. In order to do so, however, the players need to gather experience and funds to purchase said equipment by participating in 12 vs. 12 battles.
There are currently two battle modes to choose from: (1) Assault. It involves protecting your own base while trying to destroy your opponent’s base; the game is over once one of the bases is destroyed. (2) Conquest. This battle mode uses a scoring system in which the team or the players with the most number of points after a conflict wins.
The customization of one’s own Mech also tests the player’s skills in how well they can improve their own equipment without suffering any critical loss in durability and speed of the Mechs. The game also rewards players for their exceptional marksmanship, military tactics, and physical awareness. A new feature such as Community Warfare which allows players to join one of the six groups or mercenary corporations; an addition to new factions with Clan Invasions, that are added after a few weeks from the launching of the game.
The game is quite impressive since most combat vehicle themed games are not preferred due to complicated controls and the slow movement of the virtual machine itself. MechWarrior Online however, has simpler controls and user friendly interface and UIs. The system and graphics really gives the players the feel and the perspective of controlling a bipedal vehicle while engaging in combat.
The scenario and game modes are also good, and there are also the different types and stats of weapons and equipment for the customization of your own Mech to choose from. The game is entertaining and easily accessed if you have a stable internet connection. For mecha enthusiasts, gamers or even individuals looking for a break on the usual RPG games, MechWarrior Online is a sure hit.
The game was published and developed by a technology corporation by the name of Piranha Games which is based in Vancouver, British Columbia. The President and Executive producer Mr. Russ Bullock, a longtime fan of the series, wanted to start a joint collaboration and negotiated the license back from Microsoft, with the founder of Smith & Thinker and previously founder of FASA Corporation - Mr. Jordan Weisman, after the company had been idle for years. In October 2008 discussions started between the two for the new MechWarrior game. In March 2009, after almost half a year, having drafted a presentation for a prototype scenario; both companies selected a team of full-time designers and programmers. The game was officially announced with a three minute debut trailer in July 2009. During those times, the game was simply called MechWarrior, as it was meant to be a reboot of the series; later, the official title was changed to MechWarrior Online. A Twitter campaign was launched as a starting advertisement in October 2011. A large group, local to Piranha Studios met and discussed joining forces eventually led to resolving the initial problem of finding a publisher. With a publisher and funding the project was pressed ahead for development.
