MapleStory Europe is a Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game, a MMORPG, available for Windows PCs. MapleStory Europe is rather different from its competitors in that it is a 2D side-scrolling affair, like the early platformers, which is quite unique for the genre.
It’s a cute RPG that allows you to build a character of your own design and guide them on an adventure through mountains, villages and forests. Players are able to choose from four classes for their character, including a Magician, a Thief, a Bowman and a Warrior. These different classes of character are able to develop their own particular skills as the player progresses through the game.
MapleStory Europe features a huge range of monsters to fight and skills to learn, with many paths to follow through different skill classes, which can be broken up into more sub-classes. Its ability to be played for free means that it often compared to Runescape and Neopets. But it is also reminiscent to World of Warcraft and in a similar way, it requires cash to be used to make improvements to characters and to purchase weapons and skills. It compares favourably to WoW, but the fighting sequences can often be slow tiresome and this is the main drawback of the game.
As mentioned, MapleStory Europe being a MMORPG, it is bound to be compared with the king of the genre, World of Warcraft, and given the unreliability of that game’s servers, MapleStory Europe compares rather well. It is also in a similar bracket to the latter Final Fantasy games, yet its free to play character means that it must be compared more closely with Runescape, which is possibly its closest rival for the best free to play MMORPG. Yet MapleStory Europe, for many players at least, is far superior to its equivalents due to the size of the game, the number of customisations and specialisations which can be used and its genuinely unique 2D side-scrolling gameplay.
All in all, it’s a great game that clearly has longevity, like many other Korean produced RPGs. This game will clearly please anyone who enjoys an in-depth MMORPG and its number of additional character customisations and attribute improvements means there is enough in the game to keep RPG fans happy for many months of play. Given that it is free to play, it is a brilliant addition to the RPG fan’s collection, without having to shell out for hours of game-playing fun.
The game was developed by the South Korean firm Wizet, and has been published by various firms for marketplaces in different countries - such as Shanda for the Chinese market and Nexon for Western audiences - through Wizet's innovative use of a franchise system for releasing the game in competing markets. The launch of the game was overseen by Min Kim, Vice President of Global Business Development at Wizet. Min began his work within the entertainment industry as a member of the business development team at Nexon, before assuming the position of Vice President of Nexon America. Since its development began in 2004, MapleStory has become one of the most popular MMORPGs available.
