VirtualDub is one of the most popular video capture and processing utility designed for both 32-bit and 64-bit Microsoft Windows platforms. It is fully compatible with all Windows versions from Windows 98 through XP and Vista to Windows 7 and 8. The software can effectively process, filter, and recompress linear video streams. It mainly operates on AVI files but can read MPEG-1 and works well on BMP images too.
However, you have to ensure that all the necessary vidoe and audio codecs are already installed for it to work perfectly. The program can be ported to other operating systems such as Linux and Mac Os X using Wine although native support for VirtualDub in non-Windows platforms is currently not available.
VirtualDub comes with a number of impressive features. For a start, it supports Video for Windows and Direct Show video capture. Other capture features include ability to capture any type of AVI video, audio VU meters, video noise reduction, a histogram, and auto-stop settings. It comes with overlay and preview modes and a selectable crop area for added efficiency in video processing. The program has a designate alternate drive to take care of capture overflow issues. VirtualDub is designed to overcome the most common problems and limitations in video cameras that can record video. For example, Canon can record in M-JPEG format which is sometimes incompatible with a few NLE programs like Vegas 6.0 and Vegas 7.0. This is a problem that VirtualDub overcomes simply by saving an AVI file in the old AVI format that can play in Vegas. Other features of VirtualDub include support for DV capture of Type 2 Firewire controllers and ability to create video files from bitmaps and targas series.
There are many other programs similar to VirtualDub in the market today such as Vivia 0.1.1, Avidemux 2.6.3, Video pad editor, and vReveal. In comparison to these other programs, VirtualDub scores high in terms of stability, ease of installation, functionality, and appearance. However, the program is not on the same level with full-featured general-purpose editors such as Adobe Premiere in terms of editing power and capacity but is well designed for fast linear video operations. Its batch processing ability enables the user to edit and process a good number of video files at one go. This feature can be enhanced further using third party filters.
VirtualDub is a useful video capture and processing software that anyone can use to cut segamnets of a video, add new segments, or rearrange different segments in a video file. It comes with several filters that can be used to, for example, reduce video size, convert a video to grayscale, or simply play around with the video file to your desired output. The program’s capabilities can further be extended using plugin filters. This makes a versatile tool for a beginner or experienced video editor.
Written by Avery Lee, VirtualDub was originally created to compress Sailor Moon anime videos. It is available as freeware under GNU General Public License at SourceForge. The software has over time forked into several versions. Some versions such as the VirtualDubMod have been abandoned along the way. Some of the features in VirtualDubMod such as MKV and Dolby AC-3 are no longer available in the current version.
