There are many challenges to downloading and sharing movies online such as file size and DVD rips that lose their original quality as soon as they are compressed or converted. You can easily overcome such problems using the RatDVD program.
This is a file compressed with a proprietary codec called XEB which works by reducing the size of a large file without losing its video and audio quality. For example, a normal DVD which is usually more than 4 GB can be reduced significantly to around 1 or 2 GB using RatDVD. The compressed file can then be played in a PC with the required codec installed or in a DirectShow compatible DVD player. RatDVD can also reconvert the file to the standard DVD format again. RatDVD files can be played in Windows Movie maker too with all the qualities you get from an original DVD movie.
RatDVD has a number of features that take the full features of any DVD-9 movie and compresses it into a 1 GB .RatDVD format container without losing the DVD’s original qualities. Some of the key features of RatDVD include the ability to retain the DVD’s full anamorphic picture such as the DVD’s original content and Pan/Scan and WideScreen settings. RatDVD supports seamless branching with 8 audio channels, 9 multiple video angles, and 32 subpictures among others. It is capable retaining the original movie’s versions such as the Directors Cut, the Theater version, alternate story endings, animated anecdotes, cut scenes, and others.
It also preserves the DVD’s menus, title navigation, and other menu items. The movie retains all its IMDB XML tagging scheme too. You also keep the compressed movie’s tagging information accessible via Windows Explorer. All these RatDVD features are also designed to ensure that you can play the movie in a wide variety of players and media centers.
Unlike similar programs such as Matroska, ShrinkTo5, and DVD Shrink, RatDVD is designed to give you the exact features of any standard video DVD. Other software may provide good compression but in most cases the movie will not retain most of its original features. Their output format may also be incompatible with some players. RatDVD on the other hand enables you to play and watch even the toughest ripped DVDs in a wide selection of players without a problem.
The latest version is supported by Media Player, comes with a convert/burn option in its navigation menu, has an additional “Burn” command option, and has fixed previously noted bugs with additional enhancements. RatDVD is a good choice if you want to download a movie complete with its full DVD features and watch it conveniently using any player. The program provides a fast, reliable, and free way to download full DVD movies and retain all the audio tracks, angles, subtitles, and other features.
RatDVD was originally developed by Peter Jensen together with a group of students from Danish and Russian universities. The program is available as freeware and is only compatible with Windows. Its current version is 0.78 which was released in 2005. Although a freeware, it does not support any copyright protected movie DVD. However, it allows you to rip and compress any DVD and still retain the DVD’s full features and watch the movie from any player of your choice.
