Microsoft Office is well-regarded as the gold standard for business documents. Word is the most commonly used program in offices and schools, and programs like Excel and Power Point are ubiquitous in both business and educational settings as well. According to Wikipedia, Microsoft Office is remarkable in that it introduces Microsoft Office web apps.
The Microsoft Office Service Pack is simply a series of updates to the program to fix bugs and/or to help the program operate more smoothly. A list of some Microsoft Office programs is as follows :
• Word, used for creating written documents.
• Excel, used for spreadsheets.
• Power Point, for visual presentations.
• OneNote, used for gathering and sharing notes that can be audio, handwritten, or typed.
• Outlook, primarily an email application, but also includes a calendar, task manager, contact manager, note taking, a journal and web browsing.
• Publisher, used for publishing.
• Access, a database management system
And there is also so many other programs that are widely used for a variety of business and consumer applications. However, the last standard version of Microsoft Office only comes with Word, Excel, Power Point, OneNote, Outlook and Publisher. Many versions of the software are available, all designed with specific needs in mind, including students and a variety of businesses. These include: Starter, Office Online, Personal, Home and Student, Home and Business, Standard Professional, Professional Academic University, and Professional Plus. Starter comes standard on most PC’s as a free trial version, with the full version being purchasable online after the free trial ends.
Microsoft Office Service Pack contains a number of new features, including new image editing and text editing options, which is great for creative users trying to find a way to make their work unique and personalized. And in addition, Office seems to be more geared toward connection with social media sites such as Facebook, Myspace and Linkedin. With the increasing prevalence of social media and the prominent role it now plays in the business world, this innovative step will prove very useful to consumers. A number of features have been removed, mainly due to recent changes in computer hardware. For example, since most computers no longer use floppy disks, the “Package for Presentation Disk” feature was removed from Power Point.
Although Office has many competitors, including the popular Libre Office, which is free and open source, Microsoft Office remains the most trusted office suite program, as well as the most widely used. iWork, for Apple computers, is considered the biggest competitor for Office, as Apple is the biggest competitor with Windows. Another common alternative to Office is Google Docs.
As a long-time Windows “fan”, I’ve found that I love Windows products for being more affordable than Apple and also more responsive to user feedback. The popularity of Office in business and education should speak for itself. Microsoft Office will likely remain at the top of its field for the foreseeable future, in part due to their quick responses to bug reports, as evidenced by this new Microsoft Office Service Pack.
Microsoft was founded in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. It is the world's largest software producer as well as one of the top ten companies in the world, as measured by market shares. They introduced the Windows operating system in 1985, and have been on top of the home computing industry ever since. Microsoft Office debuted in 1990. It started with only Word, Excel, and Power Point, which became instant successes, and yet Microsoft has never stopped their ongoing process of revision, editing, and introducing new innovations. The company also strives for the best in terms of customer service and technical support for their products.
