LogMeIn is a Remote desktop access solution that promises to provide seamless access between your PC’s and/or Mac’s. LogMeIn has a free edition that does not have the complete feature set of its paid counterpart, but does an excellent job at its core functionality.
LogMeIn PRO comes at a yearly cost of $69.95/computer and comes with all the bells and whistles you would expect from a paid solution, and more! Let us dive into its features and find out if it proves its mettle on the usability and functionality fronts.
The setup process is pretty easy and a naïve computer user would be able to swiftly move through it. Although the program options might seem daunting at first, there is little to worry about. First up, you need to sign up with LogMeIn by registering on their website LogMeIn.com. The sign up process is a breeze and all you got to do is give a name to the computer that you want to remotely connect to and a password to control the access. The name given in the signup process does not have to be the host name of the machine; it is just a way for LogMeIn to recognize the computer. LogMeIn provides an option to control the access by means of an access code, in case you do not have an admin password set on the computer. Once you are through the signup process, your computer is now ready to be accessed from any remote computer device.
To access the machine, you need to log into your LogMeIn account from your mobile computer. Once you are in, you can see your machine name listed out under “My Computers”. The listing also shows if the remote machine you want to access is up and running or not. If the remote machine is up, all you have to do to connect is just click on the computer name and then click on “Remote control”. The remote access works from the browser window itself! That is the bare minimum there is to connect to your remote machine. However, you get plenty of different settings that you can configure via the Preferences page. You can configure your remote control settings (things like disabling input from the remote computer etc.), network settings, security settings; reboot options (you can reboot LogMeIn on the remote computer or even the whole remote computer) and so on.
There are quite a few competitors to LogMeIn Free in the remote desktop access arena. One of the widely used solutions is TeamViewer. TeamViewer comes up with a compact installer or if you don’t like installing, a portable version is available too. There is also a web based version that does not require any kind of plugin/ActiveX installation. Another feature rich option is Mikogo that has the healthiest set of features when it comes to free options. However, it does not work too well with slower connections and often disconnects in the middle of a session.
There is no doubt that you will find a lot of comparable products to LogMeIn Free in the market for remote access. Some would boast of additional features and some would boast about ease of setup. Still, when it comes to reliability and speed, every other product lags way behind. The user friendliness of LogMeIn free is also unmatched and the fact that it is free for both personal and commercial use makes the deal sweeter.
