While they may divide opinion, karaoke nights always bring out the crowds. A lot of people enjoy the idea of being a star, if only for the length of time it takes to sing the While large-scale karaoke events may involve a lot of expensive and heavy equipment, KaraFun caters to people who just want to have a bit of karaoke fun at home.
The KaraFun player was designed as a means of accessing the KaraFun music library, which is a collection of over 15,000 songs in karaoke format, which are made available to users who purchase a subscription. Fortunately, however, the player also works perfectly happily with karaoke files owned by individual users. It also has a respectable editor, which allows users to create their own karaoke files. The player supports all the key formats in its area, including midi, KAR, KFN, CDG and MP3. It is impressively featured with a powerful animation engine, which makes it easy for singers to keep track of the song and ensures that the highlighted lyrics stay in time with the music.
For those who want a bit more control, KaraFun allows users to tweak playback, for example to adjust tempo or key or to add an echo effect. For those who want to have their efforts recorded for posterity, there is a voice recording option. Thankfully, the user interface is well-designed and those who simply wish to use the player as a player should be able to do so without any difficulty. The player is available for Android and iOS as well as Windows, although it is debatable how each it would be to use anything more than basic functionality on such small devices as smartphones and tablets.
There are a number of alternative Karaoke players available to Windows users. VanBasco’s Karaoke Player is another full-featured player, which is simple enough for those who just want to have a sing-along but with plenty of options for those who want more control. The default version only supports English, however, which may not be ideal. Karaoke 5 does have multi-language support, but the free version only supports the playing of files. Those who want to edit them will have to pay for the full version. On the plus side, the software is very affordable and it does have some great tools.
Walaoke doesn’t have the same sort of features list as the others so far mentioned, but it’s fine as a basic player and it does have the cool option of allowing users to use their own video input as a background.
For those who want a powerful player and editor, KaraFun is hard to beat and its strong prowess in animations is also a draw. For those who just want to have fun, KaraFun is also a good choice but Walaoke’s video feature may be more entertaining.
The KaraFun player was developed by the Recisio company, essentially as a means for users to access their karaoke library. Recisio also develops Karaoke Version, which is a leading legal source for backing tracks and Okarima, which is a tool for monitoring online rights infringements. Although a relatively young company (founded in 2006), it is partnered with key players in the music industry, including Universal, EMI, Sony/ATV, Warner Bros and Peer Music.
