The secondary storage or “hard disk” is one of the most important parts of the PC. It stores all the data including documents, multimedia contents, files and even the OS. With time, the disk begins to fail and such failures can lead to data loss or data corruption. HD Tune Pro software provides such disk monitoring including benchmarking to measure and compare performance from deterioration.
HD Tune Pro primarily analyzes the disk S.M.A.R.T. data to perform further analysis and detect errors and performance metrics. The interface is simple tabbed one with Disk monitor, Benchmarks, Error Scan, Health, Folder Usage, Erase, Random Access and AAM tabs. The software provides methods to benchmark hard disk I/O speeds, transfer rate and burst rate for read and write operations for various file sizes. Read/Write tests performed are tested for both serial and random access in order to gauge true performance of the disk. These tests also convey the maximum seek time and access time for both HDD and SSD and test the cache performance as well. It supports 4 TB+ disks, SSDs and USB 3.0 storage devices along with device and temperature statistics. Error scanning is done from S.M.A.R.T. data with error log analysis and exact failure cause determination.
Disk monitor can run in background to provide actual feedback of real-life disk performance and folder usage provides an overview of the folders consuming the maximum storage. Multiple drives are supported and so are external ones. Secure erase is a feature to safely erase and shred data from disk without the fear of someone recovering it using recovery software or data scrubbing techniques. The software is available for Windows XP and up and English is the only language supported.
HDDLife Pro is a Windows software offering similar facilities but lacks the benchmarking options as well as secure erase options. CrystalDiskMark is a free Windows software providing almost similar features with health information and errors from S.M.A.R.T. data. GSmartControl and smartmontools are two open-source alternatives for Windows and are also obtainable on a wide range of platforms. HDDScan is a free disk utility software that also supports RAID volumes as well. H2Testw is a USB disk testing utility software but is limited to USB drives only.
HD Tune Pro provides an excellent package with benchmarking on various parameters and error scans from S.M.A.R.T. data. The software also features support for SSD and external USB drives as well. Active disk monitoring and secure erase for irrecoverable data erasure increases the utility of the software. Along with these, there are more extensive and specialized tests available as well to collect more data pertaining to the disk including temperature.
About EFD Software
HD Tune Pro is developed by EFD Software. HD tune is a non-pro version with decreased functionality. Drive Power Manager and Easy PhotoResQ are some other software from them, the former to manage power and performance for disks and the latter to recover deleted photos. There is also Flash Memory Toolkit to test Flash storages, Nemobar and ExifQuery.
