Microsoft Excel Viewer is a free piece of software which is used for viewing and printing spreadsheets that have been created by Microsoft Excel – it is not the same as Microsoft Excel itself. It is available for Windows, and is very similar to Microsoft Word Viewer in terms of what it does. It can also be used on Windows handheld PCs, as well as standard computers.
The main features of Microsoft Excel Viewer are that you can open, view and print Excel files, even without having Microsoft Excel installed on your computer. You cannot edit, save or create new files, but this is not the purpose of the software. It is ideal for employees in a company to view files which they need to look at, or if you need to view spreadsheets but cannot afford to buy Excel. The design of the software is good, it is nice to look at as far as spreadsheet software goes, and it is very easy to navigate.
There are no similar programs to compare Microsoft Excel Viewer to, as it is not an actual spreadsheet program, just a viewer. If there were other similar programs, the viewer would have a disadvantage in that it is only available for Windows, and so currently cannot be used on Mac computers, which excludes some potential users. It also has strict terms in the license agreement, which state it should only be used with documents created by Microsoft Office software and for no other purpose. Aside from this, it is a great program which allows you to view spreadsheet files with ease. Whilst you cannot edit, save, or create new files with the viewer, you can do this with Microsoft Excel itself, which can work alongside the viewer.
Overall, I would recommend Microsoft Excel Viewer, as despite its limited functions, it was never intended for anything more. If you are looking for a piece of software to purely view and print spreadsheets, then this program carries out this purpose perfectly, and even better, it is free to download!
Microsoft Excel Viewer was originally developed by Microsoft Corporation, an American company founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen in 1975. Microsoft’s headquarters are situated in Washington, USA, where they develop, license, manufacture and support a range of computing products, services and software. Microsoft is one of the world’s most valuable companies as well as being the world’s largest software maker. In the mid-1980s, Microsoft occupied the personal computer operating system market, and then created Microsoft Windows operating systems. By 1986, there were an estimated 3 billionaires and 12,000 millionaires amongst Microsoft employees. Microsoft currently develops both PC operating systems and office suites, as well as internet search engines, video game consoles, mobile phones and other software. Microsoft’s products and business products have previously been criticised, due to their ease of use, stability and security, although this does not necessarily apply to all Microsoft products.
