Painter X3 is the latest version of Corel Painter, which is a raster based digital graphics editor. Its stable release was announced on 20 July 2013, and the software can run on Microsoft Windows and Mac, as well as on OS X operating systems.
The intention of the software is for it to be used in real time by digital artists as a functional creative tool. It can be used as an accurate simulation of media such as painting or drawing.
The software has a variety of different features. These include air brushing, oil painting, pastel sticks, felt pens and charcoal, in addition to many others. In common with Adobe Photoshop, Corel Painter X3 has a function which allows for layered editing of images, while a lot of its features are also similar to those found in Photoshop. There are also many non-traditional features to the software, however – such as pattern pens, image hose and distortion tools available to the user, which ensure it has a diverse range of functions.
In comparison to the other raster graphics editors available to a potential customer, Corel Painter performs well. Although it is compatible only with Microsoft Windows, Mac and OS X operating systems, whereas some of its opponents can run on more than those three operating systems, Corel Painter X3 excels in other areas.
For example, where Adobe Photoshop Lightroom does not allow layer editing, Corel Painter X3 does. Furthermore, Adobe Lightroom does not cater for scripting, whereas this is possible in Corel Painter; in addition to this, many of Corel Painter’s rivals do not have a histogram function – here, this software distances itself from those rivals, as this function is available for use.
To conclude this review, I think it is fair to say that Corel Painter X3 is a very good piece of graphic editing software, which has its place high on the list of such programs. When compared with its rivals, Corel Painter comes out with a great degree of success.
Corel Corporation was founded in 1985 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, by Michael Cowpland. It quickly became a successful company, with products such as Corel Graphics Suite, Corel Designer, CorelDRAW, Corel Photo Paint and Corel Snapfire contributing to its continued success over the last 29 years of its existence. Indeed, its success has been such that its revenue in 2007 was reported at 250.1 million US Dollars, and it has in excess of 1,100 employees.
