The Cobian Backup is software designed for the purpose of backing up directories as well as files in Microsoft Windows. The software allows you to back up these files from their point of original storage into other locations either in the same computer or to other different computers found in your network. The software is available in Delphi and was written by Luis Cobian. It’s year of original release is 2000. It has been rewritten a number of times and hence is available in several versions; around 11.
Cobian Backup can be said to exist in two general versions; service as well as application. It does not exert a great resource need and will usually run in the background of your system to carry out necessary backups. The files that you would wish to have backed up are copied to other locations; usually in compressed format. For this reason, the software can be used with various formats of encryption as well as compression. 7z, SQX and ZIP are all supported by this app. FTP and Unicode can both be used with this app as well.
If you wish for differential and incremental backup system, Cobian Backup may just be the backup application for you. There is also a lot of versatility in the manner of saving the backed up files. Such choices as USB memory sticks, CD, secondary hard drives as well as DVD are all options that you could opt for. Since file name length is a crucial aspect when seeking backup software, the Cobian Backup has been made very accommodative. It can support file names as long as 32,000 characters in any backup exercise.
The Advanced Maryland Automatic Disc Archiver (Amanda) is a different backup tool. As the name suggests, it is an archiving tool which comes open sourced. The open source feature is only similar to the early versions of Cobian. It is also different from the Cobian Backup tool in the manner in which backup is done. In Cobian, incremental and differential mechanisms are used in backing up whereas Amanda uses the client-server basis; the client is contacted by the server for backup to be carried out at given times.
Amanda is availed for free as a community edition or otherwise an enterprise version which is fully supported. It runs on UNIX systems and also supports those windows systems which use Samba; this shows a remarkable difference from the Cobian Backup tool functionality.
The Cobian Backup tool is indeed a valuable backup tool for Microsoft Windows systems. The fact that it is available for free is another added merit and so is the versatility of saving backups.
